Another Birthday, Homecoming week, and the Rockies!

Wow!  We have had a crazy week!  It’s been Homecoming Week here in BV, which means busy for me (with YL stuff) and super duper busy for Jem (with all the things kids do during homecoming week, plus regular school, homework, and two soccer games).  And of course, Steve had to work and go to school just like normal.

So there are three events to tell you about this week…

1.  Abel’s Birthday Party:  We went to our dear friends Nathan and Sarah’s house on Saturday for their youngest son’s birthday party.  He was two.  Here are some pics from the party…

On Saturday night, Jem had the Homecoming Dance.  He looked so cute and really rocked the hat and vest well.  I got a report from Hayley, his date, today.   She said he was “a complete gentleman.”  Steve and I are really proud of the way we have raised him.

Hayley has a cute, funky style. She wore cowboy boots & looked awesome! Jem is just too cute for words.

As if our week hadn’t been full enough, we loaded up today and headed to the Rockies game.  There were over 400 people from BV there!  They sold tickets through school, and so we thought it would be fun.  And it was!  And the Rockies won, which was great! It wouldn’t have been great if they were playing the Braves, but since they were playing the Cardinals, we were all happy that they won.

It was over 80 degrees and very sunny!  I think I even got a little sunburned, which makes me so happy I can hardly contain myself 🙂

A Week with the Q’s

It’s chilly outside.  There was a bit of ice on my window Friday morning.  The trees on the mountains are starting to turn all shades of yellow, orange, and red.  I love to look at the mountains this time of year!  I love to wear slippers around the house.  I love to get excited about another knitting season. Either I am really lame, or else I just love fall!

So no pics this week, but we have had a good one!  Join me for  “A Week With the Quilico’s”…

Monday, Sept. 14th–Jem in school all day.  Steve too. Leslie in the office and volunteering at the yearbook class.  Jem to soccer practice in the afternoon.  Leslie getting the garage ready for the first Young Life club!  Crock pot of chili feeds the fam and the boys soccer team.  Awesome YL and WyldLife club at night–tons of kids in the garage and a great time to hang out and share life.

Tuesday, Sept. 15th–Leslie in Fairplay for a meeting in the a.m. Jem at school, Steve at work, Nate at work.  Jem to soccer practice in the afternoon.  Leslie getting the garage ready for a community adult YL meeting.  Great meeting, great people, great time.  Steve makes stir-fry for dinner.  Yummy!

Wednesday, Sept. 16th–Jem and Steve at school all day.  Jem to soccer practice.  Leslie takes the Yearbook class on a field trip to learn how to crop and stuff.  Nate volunteering at youth group at night.  Quiet night at home with the fam–dinner at the table and a game of poker.  Jem wins, so Steve and Leslie must clean his bathroom sometime soon.

Thursday, Sept. 17th–Jem at school.  Steve at work.  Jem to soccer practice.  Leslie and Jem to volleyball matches in the evening.  Steve at class in the evening.

Friday, Sept. 18th–Steve and Jem at school all day.  Nate at work.  Leslie at yearbook class then in the office (i.e. on the computer working while watching Oprah).  Jem to soccer.  Jem to hang out with friends for the night.  Leslie and Steve to a poker game with friends (3rd and 4th 😦 ).

Saturday, Sept. 19th–Nate at work.  Steve, Leslie, Jem, Mimi (the other Amicus exchange student from Germany) to Colorado Springs.  Jem gets a haircut.  Leslie gets some stuff at Office Max.  Everyone to the mall with Blaire.  Homecoming clothes bought.   Dinner with Robin, Rachelle, Justin, Abby.  Everyone to the BVHS game in the Springs.  BVHS loses–everyone sad.  Back to BV.

Sunday, Sept. 20th–Everyone to church.  Lunch at Cortese house.  Jem does homework all day.  Steve does homework until the Broncos play.  Leslie naps on the couch all afternoon and knits a little.  Steve and Leslie to friends’ house to hang out.  Jem still doing homework.  Leslie writes a blog, Steve does philosophy homework, and Jem practices his guitar.

I love this life!  Our September might seem full, but we are blessed and happy.  Steve is truly loving school.  Jem is a total rockstar.  And I’m as cool as ever.

Peace,

Leslie

p.s. stay posted for pictures next week from Jem’s homecoming dance!

Fish, Football, First birthday!

We have had a weekend of alliteration.

First, Steve caught a massive fish (rainbow trout) on Friday.

17 inches and beautiful.

Then, Buena Vista had their first home football game of the year.  And it was Jem’s first football game ever.  He said it is fun to hang out with everyone, but the sport is a little boring because there are so many breaks.

And on Saturday night, we went to our friends Will & Jami’s house to have dinner and celebrate Campbell Jane Ismert’s first birthday!  It’s hard to believe that Izzy and Lisa adopted CJ a year ago!  It has gone really quick and we are so glad to be a part of their life.  We love Izzy and Lisa, and we love Campbell Jane too.  Here are some pics from the First birthday party…

It has been a fabulous weekend.  Tonight we are having some people over for dinner and enjoying the warmth outside before it goes away.  We woke up to snow on the mountain peaks today!

Family trip to TARGET!

Yep, that’s right.  When you live in a really small town, you have to make a day of it when you need to go to Target.  So actually, Jem needed some tennis shoes (and he didn’t like that we called them tennis shoes when they weren’t for tennis, they were for gym class), some shorts, and a calculator.  And I wanted to go to Target before some coupons I had expired.

So off we headed to Silverthorne, CO (outlet malls, a movie theater, and a Target.  heavenly :)).  The whole fam went.  We shopped, ate dinner, and then watched a movie.

So don’t fire us as parents, but maybe be worried.  The first movie we took Jem to in the States was Inglorious Basterds.  The new Quentin Terantino movie.  Yep, it’s about a group of soldiers killing Nazi’s in WWII.  But Jem wanted to see it, and Nate and Steve love gory, bloody movies, and I get out-voted in every family vote, so off we went.

The cool thing is that the movie caused us to have great conversation on the way home, and we are all learning so much by having such different people live in one house.  It’s really cool!  And it’s just the way we are asking the Lord to make it.

Here are a few pics from Jem’s first trip to Target, and our first official “Quilico Family 2009” photo….

P.S.  I will include a pic of Jem from his first soccer game on Thursday.  It was right after he scored a goal for the team!  I was one happy soccer mom.

Cheese plus bread equals heaven :)

My job is pretty amazing.  Really amazing, actually.  I spend a lot of time hanging out with people and building relationships.  One of my favorite things that I get to do each week is “Grilled Cheese Lunch.”  I started this with a group of girls when I moved to Buena Vista.  They all come to my house each Wednesday during lunch and we eat grilled cheese sandwiches, talk, and then devour a pan of “blondies.”

When we started having lunch every Wednesday, the girls were starting their sophomore year.  Today, we had the first grilled cheese lunch of their senior year.   <tear>  They are really growing up and it has been so fun to watch them these past few years!

The highlight of our lunch today is that Jan-Eric (our exchange student, if you missed previous posts) joined us.  We usually don’t allow boys, but we decided we would make an exception for German boys.  It was hilarious to see Jem interact with 8 girls 🙂

Here is a pic from today…

A few posts ago, I wrote about how Steve and I are “on a mission to bring heaven to earth.”  I love this picture because I feel like maybe I got a glimpse of that today…  And that’s what we’re aiming for!
